Veterinary school is a vibrant hub of learning for all aspiring veterinarians, but there are some practical procedures, tips, and tricks that you will use in the workplace once you have graduated.
Without it, the opportunity to join this amazing profession would be impossible, however, once you are in the workplace, you learn that not everything fits into place immediately. There are a few things that seem basic but you don’t seem to be taught them, so we have decided to be a helping hand, and fill you in!
How to avoid being attacked
It’s a scary one, no doubt, but it’s a truth we shouldn’t shy away from. In fact, if you prepared for any situation, then you can get yourself out of any compromising situation. As the scouts say ‘Always be prepared’.
So how do veterinarians deal with these situations? Here are a few simple articles teaching you how to behave if an animal is becoming more aggressive.
The Essentials
Once you begin your career, there will be certain pieces of equipment that you will be using all the time. We don’t mean the medical or surgical equipment, but actually some practical pieces of kit you will need that will not be provided.
It goes without saying that whatever profession you are in, having a pen or pencil on hand is always useful, and yet they always seem to go for ‘walkies’ so it is good practice to have your own stationary on hand.
If you are out and about working with farm animals, keep items such as duct tape and rope - no, you aren’t conducting a heist, but these are actually really useful! The duct tape is great for keeping wool or fibre out of the way during abdominal surgery, and the rope is so useful for all sorts of jobs, tying gates shut, keeping your animals contained, etc..
You will have bandage scissors provided for you, but if you can get your hands on your own pair, you can choose a pair you really like. It might sound silly, but if you buy them, you can find a pair you really like and that work really well, which will make your life a lot easier.
Stay Smiley!
When you are doing all you can for animals and their owners aren’t appreciative or even plain rude, it can be difficult to maintain a positive demeanour. It’s really important to remember that these people are stressing out because their pet, their family member is sick.
Learning to stay professional when your clients are being irate is a trick that is so important to master, and you’ll only start being able to practice this trick when you begin working.
You Got This!
Don't worry too much about the jump from vet school to the work place, you'll begin picking things up as you go along and if you ever find yourself in a pickle, just ask for help or advice. We all want what is best for the animals, so your colleagues will be happy to help!
So there you are, the things that vet school didn't teach you. If you would like to stay updated with the latest vet news follow our facebook - https://www.facebook.com/oxypetsuk/
